How To Decorate: Making A Rental (or any space for that matter) Your Own~

Welcome everyone!

I am so excited to be taking part in the How To Decorate Series hosted by Beth at Home Stories A to Z!

25 fabulous bloggers are participating in this series, and I am honored to be bringing up the tail end...last the best of all the game.  Lol!  But seriously, if you want some amazing decorating inspiration, make sure and start at the beginning on Beth's blog and follow all the way through!  If you've been following along, and are just joining me from my friend Brooke at All Things Thrifty, welcome!  I'm glad to have you here!!

The problem with being the last post out of 25 amazing bloggers, is trying to come up with a topic that is fresh and that hasn't been addressed already.  But then I got to thinking and decided that talking about how to make a rental (or any space for that matter) your own is the perfect topic.

For the past 5 years, I have been living in rental spaces.  Two of them.  One that I couldn't do anything to, and one that I have had the luxury of painting, but that I still couldn't change any of the major finishes in the space.  Both have taught me some valuable lessons that I want to share.

My current living room (in a rental space)

Regardless of whether or not we rent or own, we do not always have the luxury of being able to change the things we aren't happy with.  Whether it is because we are renting and can't change things contractually, or whether we own but can't afford to make the changes we want to make, we don't always have exactly the space we want.

So in this post, I want to address ways to make a space your own without making permanent or costly changes.  It is possible!

Fun Cardboard Animal Heads~

Okay, I admit it. I'm still loving the cardboard animal head trend.  I know that a lot of people are "so over it".  But I love whimsy in decorating and I think that the different cardboard and paper mache animal heads available right now fit the "whimsy" bill just right.

Perhaps you recall my boys' bedroom with its cardboard deer head.  It is seriously one of my favorite spaces that I've created...like...ever.

Before I go on, I want to say that this is not an advertorial post.  I was not paid by or even approached by Cardboard Safari (the same company that made the deer head in my boys' room)...I just happened to see these adorable items in an email this past week, and I loved them so much I wanted to share...

First up this adorable rhino...

Crushing on Square Wainscot~

Last week I talked about my design crush on wallpaper. This week it's another type of wall treatment. Wainscot!

But not just any wainscot.  My design crush is on square wainscot.  Honestly, I've had a love affair with the stuff for several years, but it's still going strong in the design world, so today I wanted  to share a few of my favorite inspiration photos of this timeless look.

Wonderful Wallpaper~

My latest decor infatuation is wallpaper.  The more exuberant the better.  I realize that it isn't necessarily for the faint of heart, but done well, wallpaper can be an amazing addition to a space.

So today I wanted to share a round-up of some of my favorite wallpaper images that I've gathered on Pinterest.  Basically...this is an eye-candy post.  Hope you enjoy!

The Great Gray Debate~

I am in the middle of a debate with myself.

Here is my living room as it currently looks (well, not exactly because I change things up so often, but basically this is it...the furniture is the same at least. lol!)

I love the color of the slipcovers on my IKEA Ektorp sofas.  They are a lovely oatmeal/linen color and I adore them.  Here's the problem...this particular color only comes in a linen blend fabric.  And it has to be dry cleaned.  ( I tried washing one of the cushion covers, and trust me...it really does need to be dry cleaned.)  I've had the covers cleaned once in the 2 years I've owned them.  And let's just say that I could have bought a new cover for the cost of cleaning them.

Beautiful Home Office: Design Dump~

This past Friday morning, I got to go visit one of my good friends Autumn from Design Dump (her house is one of those featured in my upcoming book!).  For those of you who aren't familiar with Autumn - and you really need to be because she's am-az-ing - she recently built a home.  And when I say built a home, I mean she and her husband quite literally BUILT their home.  It's beautiful.  And I was able to see some of the spaces she's been working on.

I knew that she had recently finished her home office and I couldn't wait to see it.  It was amazing...so I asked her if she'd be willing to let me share it with you.
